The "European Maritime Law Organisation" (EMLO) was established in 1991 to provide a neutral and independent forum for debate and research on issues of interest to those concerned with EU maritime affairs, including both owners and shippers, and the European Commission maritime transport and competition law directorates general. EMLO is an independent body and holds conferences and seminars on all aspects of EU maritime law, ranging from competition and trade to safety and the environment. EMLO holds its main Annual Conference in Autumn each year, sometimes in conjunction with local law societies. Since EU enlargement in 2004 it has been holding a series of local conferences in and around the EU.
